Will of Daniel MAY of Burghfield Berkshire, mealman, 1st December 1739 (& Codicil 1st June 1740) In the name of God Amen I Daniel May of Burghfield in the County of Berkshire mealman being indisposed as to my health but God be praised of sound mind and memory and being desirous to settle my affairs do make this my last Will and Testament I resign my soul to Almighty God hoping for salvation through the merits of my Saviour Jesus Christ I will that my body be buried in such decent manner as my executors shall think fit As to my worldly estate I dispose thereof as follows I will that all my just debts be satisfied and paid and for that purpose I do charge all my estate real and personal and of what nature soever with the payment thereof I give and bequeath to my niece Mary May now living with me one annuity or yearly rent-charge of ten pounds to be issuing out of and chargeable upon all my estate both real and personal and payable to her during her natural life by equal half yearly payments at Lady Day and Michaelmas the first payment to be made at such of the said days as shall first happen next after my decease and whereas my nephew George Woodroffe hath given me his bond dated on or about the twenty-fourth day of April one thousand seven hundred and thirty-five in the penal sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to surrender certain copyhold premises within the manor of Basing Byfelete therein mentioned to which he hath been admitted tenant for life at my request and in trust for me my executors administrators and assigns as I my executors administrators and assigns should appoint and in the meantime to permit my executors administrators and assigns to receive the profits of the said copyhold premises without the claim of the said George Woodroffe or his widow or any claiming under them It is my will that in case the said George Woodroffe pay within one year after my decease to my nephew John May of Sherfield the sum of one hundred pounds then the said bond shall be delivered up to the said George Woodroffe and cancelled and that then the said George Woodroffe and his widow and all claiming under him shall and may have and enjoy the said copyhold premises without any claim or interruption of my executors administrators or assigns all the rest and residue of my estate both real and personal lands tenements and hereditaments judgements bonds leases stock and implements of and in trade debts securities and all other my goods and chattels whatsoever (subject as aforesaid and to my funerals) I give devise and bequeath to my said nephews John May of Sherfield and George Woodroffe their heirs executors and administrators to be equally divided between them and share and share alike Bit it is my will that the one hundred pounds above shall be deemed as part of my personal estate in the hands of my executors subject to the payment of my debts I do hereby nominate my said nephews John May and George Woodroffe executors of this my last Will and Testament I revoke all former and other wills and declare this to be my only last Will and Testament in witness whereof I the said Daniel May the testator have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and seal this first day of December in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred thirty-nine Daniel

last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at
his request have subscribed our names as witness there to William

Codicil to be annexed to the last Will and Testament of me Daniel May of
Burghfield in the County of Berkshire mealman and to be taken as part
thereof I give and bequeath to my niece Mary May now living with me one
other annuity or yearly rent-charge of ten pounds during her natural life
payable in the same manner and chargeable as the annuity or rent-charge of
ten pounds is by me given in and by my last Will I also give her and my
sister Corderey ten pounds apiece to buy them mourning I give and bequeath
to my sister Corderey one annuity or yearly rent-charge of ten pounds to
be issuing out of and chargeable upon all my estate both real and personal
and payable to her during her natural life by equal half yearly payments
at Lady Day and Michaelmas the first payment to be made at such of the
said days as shall happen next after my decease and in case after my debts
said annuities and legacies paid there be as I believe there will be
sufficient of my estate remaining I give and bequeath to my said niece
Mary May and my sister Corderey respectively one other annuity or
rent-charge of ten pounds apiece to be issuing out of and chargeable on my
said estate as aforesaid and payable to them severally during their
several lives at the days aforesaid and whereas I have by my said will
directed that in case my nephew George Woodroffe pay to my nephew John May
one hundred pounds then the bond therein mentioned touching the copyhold
estate within the manor of Basing Byfleet shall be delivered up to the
said George Woodroffe and he the said George Woodroffe and his widow and
all claiming under him shall enjoy the said copyhold premises Now it is my
will and I do hereby direct that the said bond be delivered up to the said
George Woodroffe without any payment or any consideration at all to the
said John May and that the said George Woodroffe and his widow and all
claiming under him shall and may have and enjoy the said copyhold premises
without any claim or interruption of my executors administrators or
assigns in all other things I do hereby ratify and confirm my said will In
witness whereof I the said Daniel May the testator have to this codicil
set my hand and seal this first day of June in the year of Our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and forty Daniel

be annexed to and as part of his last Will and Testament in the presence
of us who in his presence and at his request have subscribed our names as
witness thereto Daniel
May This Will was proved at London with a codicil annexed on the twentieth day of June in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty before the Right Worshipful John Bettesworth Doctor of Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oaths of John May and George Woodroffe the executors named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said deceased they being first sworn by commission
