Chronological History
from 'The May Family of Basingstoke' by F. Ray (1904)

Here it may be well to set forth in chronological order the various references to the May family already given, in order to show the continuity of their connection with Basingstoke:

1557. The name of May occurs in a list of the members of the Guild of the Holy Ghost.

1597. (about). Henry May wrote an account of Sir James Lancaster's expedition to the East Indies.

1704. Charles T. May elected a Burgess.

1710. Charles T. May elected an Alderman.

1711. Charles T. May elected Mayor.

1714. Charles T. May died.

1715. Daniel May elected a Burgess.

1719. Daniel May resigned.

1750. The brewery business of the May family established.

1783. Thomas May, sen., elected a Burgess (but who, on account of non‑residence, was not sworn in).

1794. Thomas May, jun., elected a Burgess.

1795. Charles May elected a Burgess.

1795. Thomas May made an Alderman.

1795. Thomas May first elected Mayor.

1803. Charles May became a lieutenant in the Volunteer Corps.

1805. Thomas May elected Mayor for the third time.

1810. Charles May elected an Alderman.

1811. Charles May elected Mayor for the first time.

1814. Thomas May elected Mayor for the fourth time.

1817. Charles May elected Mayor for the second time.

1820. Thomas May elected Mayor for the fifth time.

1823. Thomas May, on April 24th and 25th, took part in beating the bounds of Basingstoke.

1823. Thomas May elected Mayor for the sixth time.

1824. Charles May, jun., elected a Burgess.

1829. Thomas May elected Mayor for the eighth time.

1832. Thomas May elected Mayor for the ninth time.

1834. Thomas May elected Mayor for the tenth time.

1835. On September 7th Thomas May, Charles May, sen., and Charles May, jun., took part in the election of John Simmons, the last Mayor under the Charter of Charles I.

1835. Thomas and Charles May elected Councillors under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act on December 26th, and on December 29th Thomas May was elected an Alderman.

1836. Thomas May elected Mayor for the eleventh and last time.

1837. John May was born.

1839. Charles May, jun., elected Mayor.

1841. Charles May, jun., died (January 11th).

1843. Thomas May died (June 4th).

1844. Charles May, sen., died (February 10th).

1873. Mrs. Mary May died (August 25th).

From the foregoing list it will be seen that the connection has been fairly continuous from 1557 to the present time. The gap from 1622 to 1685 covers the period of the Civil War, and may support the assumption that in those troubled days the Mays temporarily migrated from Basingstoke.
