Basingstoke Monumental Inscriptions
to
the MAY Family

St. Michael’s Church

Sacred to the Memory of
Thomas May Esq.,
who was appointed Justice of the Peace
in the first commission granted to the
Town of Basingstoke,
and many years preceeding
a Deputy Lieutenant for the
County of Southampton.
He died the 4th of June 1846,
Aged 78 years.

Here Lieth the Body of
Charles May Gent.,
late of this Towne
who departed this life
the 13th day of Sept. A.D. 1714
in the 45th year of his age.
A just husband and kind father.
A virtuous man of Christian Principles
and sincere Friend of the Poor
and he deserves to be remembered.
He married Ann
daughter of Robert Noake of Southcote
in the County of Berks, Gent.,
by whom he had issue
Ann, Mary, Elizabeth, Charles, Daniel, Christopher and Jane.
Of these, Elizabeth and Christopher died some time before their father
and the said Charles soon after viz:
the 8th day of October 1714
in the 6th year of his age.

Here Lieth interred the Body of
Christopher May
son of Charles May, Gent.,
and Ann, his wife,
born 9th October 1712,
died 3rd January 1713/4.
Also Elizabeth daughter of Charles May, Gent.,
born 14th January 1701,
died 7th April 1708.

Here, next the remains of her dear husband,
lies interred the Body of
Mrs Ann May,
above 30 years the widow of Mr Charles May.
She died 8th March 1745,
Aged 62 years.
